Thanks for the shoutout, man! Was a blast trading Final Fantasy observations with you this week.

Curious to know what got you riled up with Sea of Stars.

I did read a reviewer say no one on the game “changes” or has a true character arc... might have been Polygon. Hasn’t marred my interest in the game. It looks amazing.

Yeah, I saw something I'd describe as metacommentary, which might be my least favorite thing.

I'm very interested in the game as well! Probably picking it up soon

Haha totally. Metacommentary... I just can’t. Looking forward to what you write on the subject though. Will likely play Stars after Baldurs Gate 3 and Starfield.

Skyrim was my first and probably last Bethesda game. Less a reflection on them, probably, and more about my issues with open world design.

Baldur's Gate seems to be all the rage so I might pick it up once I finally get a PS5 or Steamdeck.

Totally fair. I’ve been playing Bethesda games since Oblivion on 360. For me, I enjoy the open-ended nature of their game design. Aimless adventures is how I see them.

Steam Deck is an incredible machine. It’s how I play BG3. Not a perfect experience but cheaper than a PS5 and Sony has been publishing their stuff on PC these days so a good compromise

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking. And I rarely get games new as they come out.

Though I sure do want to play FFXVI right away!

Haha true. And FFVII remake part 2 early next year

Haha, as someone whose bachelor's was in philosophy I would love to read your takedown of some 2500+ years of human thought!

And I am also extremely amused by a game with the premise, "what if the Pokemon TCG was targeted towards pre-literates?" as though that was not already the premise of the original game. :P (I say this with love! There are very few better ways to teach a child the three R's than with good old Pokemon cards.)

Ah, this is an interesting thought! Never considered using Pokemon as a teaching tool.

My quibbles with philosophy can really be summed up by: Either they're too dumb to explain clearly or I'm too dumb to understand.

Yeah Pokemon cards are underrated as a "how to learn math" tool. When I was 8 I saw a Pokemon card where, like, Exeggcute's EGG HEAD BASH ATTACK made you flip a coin until you got tails and did 10 damage for each heads, and I went, "hey, that attack is GARBAGE" and started doing some discursive probability shit in my head to prove it. Proof I should've been a Woman in STEM!

Don't sell yourself short intellectually - plenty of philosophical writing is kind of obtuse, either unintentionally (due to barriers of time/language), or intentionally (because academia rewards jargon-laden arcana). But, again - we're talking 2500+ years of writing, so it's hard to generalize. Plenty of philosophers are very clear, and even funny!
