I enjoyed the first few books in the series then felt it was getting a bit dark for me (though I can’t remember exactly why) and left it after maybe book 3. I hadn’t realized it was up to 8 now! But yes she is a very readable writer, with compulsive plots and great characters.

They do get quite dark! But at the same time, the relationships get pushed increasingly to the front

I've been happy to see you and Lincoln Michel reviewing books by supposedly "problematic" authors. 2026 is off to a good start in one sense, at least.

I love a good mystery, but I agree that isn’t really the main attraction in these books.

And yeah, class in both its traditional and modern forms is a HUGE thread in these books. And the first one does a great job, I think, of pointing out what’s funny about class relations without ever devolving into broad parody. People remain people, even though they’re recognizable class “types,” too.
