I couldn't even finish the first book of The Wheel of Time. It was just so damn boring, and literally nothing was happening. I think I made it about halfway before I finally tapped out.

Loved this essay! Thank you for voicing these opinions, love hearing honest takes. My husband and I read Station Eleven for a book club and were on an island with our dislike of the book -- agree with you I might have found something in it had it not been for all the hype.

What I remember most about that book is how bad the dialogue was. I just kept thinking, "Has she ever heard people talk?"

I don't appreciate you reminding me of how cringey the book Bellweather was.

I feel as if I kept reading because I couldn't believe that this was what the book was about. Like, there had to be something that salvaged this nonsense!

I read Lord Fouls Bane when I was fourteen and just finished Lord of the Rings so that was a step change for sure. However, it meant everything he ripped off from Tolkien was all the clearer. I do like the Bloodguard, the Lords and the Giants but it was the first book I read where I hated the main character. He is the real monster of the story. As for the style of writing, the less said the better. If I had to read “Covenant’s mouth filled with ashes” one more time I probably would have lost it! 😁
