As someone who frequently hikes up mountains and who has also moved to the other side of the world, I can so relate to this beautifully written post.
Why don't you see the stars in Asia (too literal, I know).
Light pollution! All the cities have so many lights on at night that you can't see the night past them.
If you're far enough outside the city and high enough, you can see a bubble of light hanging over the cities.
