I always felt FfC was where the series started to go off the rails because Martin's editors could no longer contain him due to his fame (a trap many famous authors fall into). This wonderfully written piece could almost make me think I'm wrong. I mean, I'm not, but it could almost do that. :)
The editorial issue is a very real one. I think it's more evident in the next book than this one, especially since I think FfC is the shortest of the books in the series, but I do think this is where Martin's strengths do begin to hamstring his ability to control his narrative.
I like the result! But, I mean, we're eleven years and counting since the last novel came out. He's got a bit of a mess on his hands.
