Originally published at Entropy Magazine in 2015. 2015 is the 30th anniversary of the founding of Studio Ghibli and, according to Hayao Miyazaki, it may also be one of its final years as a studio. Because this is one of my favorite films studios and Miyazaki is one of my favorite artists, who’s made some of my favorite films, I’ve decided to go through the history of Studio Ghibli one film at a time.
Very interesting take. I loved the film, maybe because I didn’t try to compare it to other Ghibli films, I just enjoyed it for what it was and what tried to be. But I can understand that because of the film’s specificity, it’s very hit or miss.

This was an interesting take that I just came across. I think it's mostly fair, either the style and humour works for you, or falls flat.
I wrote about my own viewing of My Neighbours the Yamadas here https://hiddenjapan.substack.com/p/mundanity-through-studio-ghibli
