Well, the votes are in and we’ll be reading Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun for the foreseeable future! I’ll make an introductory post around the beginning of February but we won’t start the actual readthrough until March. This should give people time to get the first book and read the first chapter.
Anyway, more to come!
Also, a reminder that I’ll be doing a podcast on the first eight chapters of House of Leaves next week, so get reading if you’d like to join in.
This Week’s Posts
Tuesday: NOIR: the first excerpt - The first chapter of Noir: A Love Story.
Wednesday: Neuromancer - The very first podcast here at Wolf! Music by my good friend Dr Bart Larsen.
and I discuss William Gibson’s Neuromancer, reading like a writer, social media, and other such things. Next month, we’ll be discussing Count Zero, the second book in Gibson’s Sprawl Trilogy.Thursday: Noir: A Cover Reveal and Pre-Order - Pretty self-explanatory, yes? Pre-order here!
Friday: For Sci-Friday, I wrote about The Language of Science Fiction.
From the Archives
Since Lord of the Rings shockingly did not win the poll, I’ll probably be writing some more pieces like this. The reason it’s been almost a year since this first one is because I’ve lost my ability to discuss the series properly, which is why I wanted to do a long read of it. Anyway, probably going to reread it again before March.
Listening
Reading
Kind of bouncing around a lot between books. The Woman in the Purple Skirt by Natsuko Imamura was interesting, especially because of how much of the narrative happens off the page, and I’m liking Agustina Bazterrica’s short story collection, but I feel a bit adrift right now with books. Probably going to pick up some more medieval poetry.
Watching
Just watched this and I love it. Seeing Sean Connery do comedy makes me long for a world where his career bent in that direction.
What Else?
I started this substack last year and for the foreseeable future it’s devoted to Varney the Vampyre, the grandfather of vampire fiction.
Been writing lots of short story. Who would’ve expected! Hopefully several of these will find homes and come out this year. One annoying thing about the stories accepted last year is that most of them are in anthologies, which means you can’t read them unless you buy the book.
So it goes.
Next week, keep an eye out for another Noir excerpt and probably an essay on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which will be paywalled. Inside that paywalled post will also be the finalized ebook of Noir: A Love Story.
That’s it from me.
Anyway, read my books that are currently out. Then review them.
Thank you.
