Have a story in the new issue of Shoreline of Infinity, which is full of Science Fiction Fairy Tales. Very cool to be published with people like Sofia Samatar. Here’s the link. My story is called Last Life in the Universe.
Sadly, it’s not available online for free so you’ll have to order a copy of the magazine if you want to read it. Anyway, I sure do like this story.
I wrote it in 2011. I believe it’s the first genre story I ever wrote so I’ve always had an affection for it. I think it takes some interesting risks with perspective and narrative. I always felt it was sort of a nightmare of the future where the people involved find hope, which, to me, sounds exactly like what a SF fairytale would be.
Then something much shorter came out at Molecule. A 100 word story about my cat. People have begun calling stories of this length a drabble. I have no idea why and also I hate it. Whoever did this should be put in prison.
I don’t typically write with such compression anymore, since I' like to get up and wander about, pace this way and that, but I find it kind of relaxing to write these very short pieces.
Next week is the one year anniversary of this newsletter, so I’ll have some things to run by you.
Until then!
Also, watch this amazing video. This may be related to an essay coming in five months.
First: Congratulations!! How exciting!
Second: I know the word "drabble" because it referred to a 100-word fanfic, back when I wrote such things in..... 2007. Sorry to see it's broken free of its restraints and entered the world of non-fanfiction writing.
